What is the Purpose of Cookies on Computers?

The use of cookies can be considered beneficial to a computer user. It can also be worrisome to computer owners that an unknown piece of text is being left on their computer. Allowing the use of cookies is up to the computer user, though many do not know that a cookie has been left on their computer or how to filter them. Understanding what cookies are and how they communicate your information is key in deciding which cookies to filter on a computer.

  1. History

    • The first cookies were introduced solely to benefit users. They were used as a convenient way to record information so that a returning user would not have to continuously input the same information over multiple visits to a website. Netscape developed the first successful cookie in 1995.

    Function

    • Cookies are used on the Internet to keep a record of user information so that when returning to a web site it is not needed to retype your user name, password and other information that rarely changes. Also other custom services can be offered to a user based on what they viewed on their last visit.

    Types

    • Transient cookies can be stored in the computer system memory for one session only and are automatically deleted when the user closes the browser. These cookies are commonly used by web sites with a shopping cart. Stored cookies are not deleted when the user closes the browser. Instead they are stored in the Preferences area of the browser and also on the hard drive. These cookies are used to track information that can identify specific users. They are also used to track browsing behavior on a web site. This is for the purpose of giving the web site owner an insight into what areas are popular or what areas of the web site may need improvement.

    Misconceptions

    • Cookies are not computer programs and cannot start up an invasive program. Also they can only contain the information that a user willingly allows a cookie access to by filling out forms on the web site.

    Solution

    • If you would like to monitor or delete cookies from your computer this can be done in the Options area of your browser. In Internet Explorer go to "Tools" then click on "Internet Options". Click on the "General" tab at the top of this window. Click on the "Delete Files" area. Now check off the box that says "Delete all off line content". Click on "OK". Wait for the hourglass to stop and now click on "Delete Cookies". In Firefox select "Tools" then "Options" and now "Privacy". In the privacy area click on "Clear Now". In the "Clear Private Data" area put a check mark next to "Cookies" and click on "Clear Private Data Now". To finish the operation click on "OK".
