About AOL High-Speed

AOL High-Speed Internet is a service package that is purchased from AOL in addition to what you pay for your Internet connection from a broadband (either cable or DSL) provider in your area. While AOL doesn't actually provide Internet service, it does offer some other useful features.

  1. Types

    • AOL offers three different plans for high-speed customers. A free version gives you just AOL email and AOL's software, and the two Essentials packages offer other features, including limited dial-up access, virus protection and technical support.

    Features

    • Both AOL Essentials plans include 10 hours of dial-up Internet access each month. If you travel often with your laptop or your cable connection drops out often, dial-up access comes in handy. If you really get into a bind, both plans allow you to purchase additional hours for a set fee with a maximum reasonable monthly charge so you don't end up breaking the bank.

    Benefits

    • Both AOL Essentials plans offer McAffee security. When casually surfing the Web, it's very easy to accidentally download dangerous files; in some cases you may not even realize they're being downloaded onto your computer. McAfee helps keep your computer safe from crippling viruses and attempts to hack into your computer to steal personal information.

    Expert Insight

    • The top-end AOL Essentials plan gives 24/7 technical support. If you are new to the Internet or to AOL, 24/7 technical support comes in handy. With this service you can speak with someone anytime of the day or night about your issues and get the assistance you need.

    Considerations

    • AOL High-Speed is not an Internet service provider. While it does offer dial-up backup for your traditional cable or DSL service, it requires you to purchase that service separately. If you don't need the technical support or McAfee security, then you may want to opt for the free version of AOL High-Speed.
