About Apple iPod Shuffle Software
The software for the Apple iPod shuffle comes pre-installed on the device and is updated by using iTunes software. The software for the iPod Shuffle is designed to play music that has been loaded in a random or sequential order. Updating the software requires downloading a software update when one is available from Apple.

Using the software on the iPod Shuffle to play music or listen to an audiobook or podcast requires that the Shuffle is properly synced with iTunes. The iTunes software is used to transfer files and update the software on the shuffle. Syncing the shuffle with iTunes will enable the software to play back the the music that has been loaded.
Playing Music

Playing music on the iPod Shuffle is done by using the volume control. There are two settings that the Shuffle can use to play music. Music can play in sequential order and random or shuffled. Changing the way the songs play is done by sliding the switch on the volume control up or down to select the desired action.

VoiceOver

The newest iPod Shuffle comes with a feature called VoiceOver. The feature will speak the song titles before they are played. VoiceOver will also announce the status of the battery, as well as other types of messages. Using the VoiceOver option requires installing the VoiceOver kit, which is done through the iTunes software.
Volume Limit

The iPod Shuffle has the option to set a volume limit. Setting this limit requires selecting the "Limit Maximum Volume" from within iTunes software. Once the volume level is set, a password can be enabled to prevent anyone from changing the setting.
Factory Settings

The software on the iPod Shuffle can be set back to the factory settings if needed. Restoring the iPod Shuffle will erase all of the music files, as well as any other data that is currently on the device. The option to reset the iPod Shuffle to its original settings can be found under the "Summary" tab within the iTunes software.
