What Causes a Runtime Error in Windows XP?
Runtime errors occur when running programs such as Internet Explorer on a computer system. A runtime is a problem with a program that the developers most likely knew about but there was nothing they could do to fix it. Common causes of runtime errors include software issues, a computer virus as well as a memory issue.

Internet Explorer
-
A runtime error in Internet Explorer is generally caused by a script that was not able to properly execute on a particular web site. When this happens a dialog box will appear with the message asking if you want to debug the error. There is nothing the user can do about these errors because the problem is within the web page.
Disable Notifications
-
Internet Explorer has options that can be set to prevent these messages from appearing when loading various web pages. Within the Internet Options settings within Internet Explorer there is an option to "Disable Script Debugging (Internet Explorer)" and "Disable Script Debugging (Other)". These two items need to be turned on to prevent script debugging from running. There is also another option called "Display a notification about every script error". This option needs to be turned off to prevent the dialog box from appearing.

Software Issue
-
Certain types of software that is installed on a computer can cause a runtime error to occur. When a runtime error occurs when running a program it is important to check the product's web site to see if there is an updated version or a patch that can be applied. Sometimes a runtime error can occur because of an add-on or additional software that can be installed to enhance a program. Remove any of these program additions to see if they were the cause of the error.
Computer Virus
-
A computer virus can be another cause for a runtime error. A computer virus can affect different areas on a computer system such as browsing the internet. A computer virus can prevent programs from working correctly and as a result display runtime errors. It is important to keep anti-virus software up to date in order to prevent any infections or problems from occurring.
Memory
-
If all software patches and updates have been installed and a runtime error is still occurring it it possible there may be a memory issue. Sometimes programs cannot access an ares of memory that is needed to execute the code correctly. This can be the result of other programs that are already using that specific area of memory. Many times this can be fixed by restarting the computer.
