Medical assistants perform both administrative tasks, such as scheduling appointments, updating medical records and filling out insurance paperwork, as well as patient care procedures such as taking medical histories and vital signs, collecting lab samples, drawing blood and changing dressings on incisions. The median salary of medical assistants depends on their education and experience, as well as the environment in which they work.

    Types

The term medical assistant can include workers who have received some education and on the job training, as well as certified medical assistants (CMAs) who have achieved certification by passing an exam from the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). In general, medical assistants who are certified earn higher salaries than those without certification. In contrast, certified medical assistants (CMAs) with less than five years experience earn about $28,000 per year, while those with five to nine years' experience earn about $32,000 per year. With ten to 19 years' experience, CMAs earn about $34,000 per year, and those with 20 years of experience or more earn about $41,000 per year.

Medical assistants in Florida have some of the highest median salaries of about $29,000 per year, while those in Georgia have some of the lowest, at about $24,000 per year. Medical assistants in New York and California make about $28,000 per year, or up to $37,000 per year for CMAs, while those in Texas earn about $25,000 per year. Medical assistants in Illinois earn about $26,500 per year. Salaries can also vary from city to city within the same state. For example, medical assistants in Houston reported median salaries of about $25,000 per year, while those in Dallas earned about $30,000.

  7. Median salaries for medical assistants also vary by the type of medical office they work for. Medical assistants who work in family medicine earned median salaries of about $23,000 per year, while those in obstetrics and gynecology earned about $24,000 per year. Those who worked in other types of medical and physicians' offices earned about $26,000 to $28,000 per year, while medical assistants who worked in hospitals earned about $30,000 per year.

  9. In general, medical assistants who work for larger companies earn higher salaries than those who work in small offices. According to Payscale.com, medical assistants who worked for companies with less than 600 employees earned median salaries of about $26,000 to $28,000 per year, while those who worked for companies with 600 to 5,000 employees earned about $36,000 to $37,000 per year. In contrast, medical assistants who worked for very large companies, with more than 50,000 employees, earned about $28,000 per year.
