Loperamide hydrochloride is the active ingredient in the over-the-counter medication marketed as Imodium and Kaopectate. Loperamide hydrochloride is used to treat diarrhea temporarily. However, if symptoms persist while taking this medication or continue for more than a few days, medical care may be needed.

Loperamide hydrochloride causes the activity within the intestines to slow down. It also alters the movement of both electrolytes and water through the bowels. According to Drugs.com, it may take as many as 48 hours for the medicine to control diarrhea symptoms.

Dosage

Loperamide hydrochloride should be taken as directed on the medicine packaging. Generally, adults take either 4 tsp. or two capsules after the first diarrhea episode and then just 2 tsp. or one capsule after subsequent diarrhea episodes. The medication should be taken with a glass of water and should not be taken more than three times within a 24-hour period. It should not be taken if stools appear bloody or black. In addition, it should not be taken if the diarrhea episodes are a result of taking an antibiotic medication.

Individuals taking loperamide hydrochloride should drink lots of water to avoid dehydration. Also, loperamide hydrochloride is not recommended for children younger than 2.
Side Effects

Loperamide hydrochloride often causes dry mouth, which can be alleviated by chewing gum or eating hard candy. Other side effects include constipation, sleepiness and dizziness. Some individuals may have an allergic reaction to loperamide hydrochloride, which may manifest as a severe rash, fever, sore throat or continued diarrhea.
