About Ford Model A Coupes

Henry Ford--founder of Ford Motor Company--was a legendary businessman. Through sheer drive and determination, Ford built and sold many models of cars and trucks. Some of them took years to perfect, some failed and some are as wildly popular as when they rolled off the assembly line. The Model A is a car that was started into production, stopped, revamped and, after several years, became very popular. The Ford Model A Coupe is a highly sought after collector car, and will bring a surprisingly high price at auctions and private sales.

    1. History

      • Henry Ford produced the first version of the Model A Ford in a rented plant in Detroit, Michigan, in 1903. This was the same year the Ford Motor Company was founded by the Malcombson Group. In 1906, Henry Ford became president of the company. In 1908, Ford introduced the Model T Ford, which became legendary to auto enthusiasts. The Ford Model A ceased production and did not return until 1927, when Ford introduced the new improved version of the first Model A. This version of the Model A stayed in production until 1931.

      Styles

      • The Ford Model A Coupe came in many different styles. There was a standard and deluxe coupe, a business coupe, sport coupe and a fashionable roadster coupe. This new Model A was equipped with a conventional-style gear shift, clutch and brake pedal. It was even equipped with four-wheel mechanical brakes.

      Features

      • The four-cylinder engine boasted gas mileage of 25 to 30 miles per gallon, cruising at a top speed of 65 mph. It is no wonder it got such great gas mileage, considering the engine was fed by a small one-barrel carburetor.

The sleek look of the Model A Coupe and the four different color choices made them popular. Many included an optional rumble seat that either folded out or remained closed to lend to the flowing body lines.

      Price

      • The typical price of a new Ford Model A Coupe when it was first produced was anywhere from $385 and up, depending on the style. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) purchased a Model A Coupe for $557 in 1930. They used it as an off-road vehicle while working in the desert. This same car would be worth many thousands of dollars to an avid car collector. Model A Coupes can be found at upscale car auctions, being auctioned online or are available from private owners. Online auction prices may range into the $20,000 range and above.

      Production

      • The Model A Ford was only produced for four years, yet its popularity remains alive. There were 633,594 Model A cars produced in 1928 and by 1931 production had dropped to 541,615. Even though the Model A Ford Coupe has not been produced since 1931, entire clubs are geared around and named after the Model A Ford. Many rebuilt versions of the Model A roll out of garages and body shops on a regular basis, fully restored and road ready.
