- BodipHier states that its hair relaxers are 100 percent safe. They claim to not include any harsh chemicals, say that their hair relaxer will not burn the scalp and can be used over both permanent and temporary dye jobs, and will not over process hair. They also say that their hair relaxer adds sheen, shine and texture to hair, and enriches the hair with amino acids, minerals and vitamins. They also claim to not use lye, which is a harsh ingredient that has been used in hair relaxers for decades.
- If the harsh ingredient lye is not used in BodipHier hair relaxers, what exactly is the active ingredient? BodipHier uses alkaline water which can move deeply into the hair without destroying the top layer of the hair, called the cuticle. It also softens the hair bonds without breaking them apart. This loosens the hair's natural pattern, causing it to straighten and relax.
- Sodium hydroxide is an essential ingredient used in most hair relaxers, and in place of that substance, BodipHier uses sodium carbonate. Sodium carbonate is significantly less abrasive and caustic than sodium hydroxide, which probably makes BodipHier's claim about being milder and safer than lye-based relaxers somewhat true. BodipHier also has a pH balance of 12, which is lower than most relaxers as they usually tend to be at about 13.
- However, any time something sounds simply too good to be true, it probably is. Even though BodipHier causes considerably less damage to your hair than most other lye-based hair relaxers, it also produces less noticeable results in straightening and relaxing the hair. So if your hair is extremely kinky or curly, BodipHier might not work very efficiently on your hair type.
- BodipHier likes to promote its hair relaxer as being 100 percent natural. Even though BodipHier's hair relaxer is more gentle and milder than most other hair relaxers, it's not necessarily "natural" by any means because just like the other hair relaxers, it consists of substances that are chemically extracted from natural sources.
