When you open a checking account for the first time, there are so many things to remember about how to use your account. Knowing how to write a check is important because the payee will need to cash the check you have presented. If it isn't legible or it is written out inaccurately, your bank will not pay the amount to your payee because of concern that it may be a forgery.

  1. Time Frame

    • The date is usually written in the top right corner of the check where it says "Date." This may be written the long way: May 24th, 2008; or may be written 05/24/08; or 05.24.08.

    Features

    • In the middle of the check it will read "Pay to the Order of," followed by a continuous line. Write out the payee's name alongside those words like this: "Joseph M. Bloggs."

Directly underneath the payee's name write, out the amount of the check like this: "Two thousand, one hundred and fifty dollars and 03/100." In the box following the amount, write the amount in numerals like this: "2,150 03/100."

    Identification

    • Your signature is required on the line underneath the box. Sign your check the same way that you signed your signature card when you opened up your checking account. In the left lower part of the check is a line named "Memo:" This may be left blank or filled in as a memo to yourself about what the check was for.

    Considerations

    • When writing dollar amounts with change such as Three thousand, eight hundred and sixty dollars and 56 cents, write it like this: "Three thousand, eight hundred and sixty dollars & 56/100." If there is no change, then place Xs in the place of change amount like this: "xxx/100."

    Warning

    • Should there be insufficient funds in your account to cover the check and you have no overdraft protection, the bank will charge a predetermined amount to your account to cover its paperwork. The check may be presented twice, incurring two charges for the insufficiency.
