What Is a Document Window?

Document windows are the graphical boxes that pop-up on the screen when the user clicks on a program icon on the desktop. A document window can also be accessed when clicking on a file name listed within a directory, such as My Documents. Once the document window is opened, the file then can be reviewed, edited or saved as a different type of document.

  1. Significance

    • Document windows provide an easy way to read or edit various types of documents. Many programs, such as word processors, will open text files saved in formats from a different type of program. Most programs allow for multiple document windows to be open at the same time.

    Size

    • A document window can fill the entire screen or can be resized to the users preference. By pointing the mouse pointer to the side edges of the window, the window size can be expanded or contracted. Many programs offer the choice of minimize, partial screen or full screen in the upper right-hand corner of the program.

    Considerations

    • Most computer programs make use of a document window, although each program sets its own parameters of what can or cannot be done within the window. Some programs allow only reading the document while others allow for unlimited edits. Many programs will save open documents at regular intervals so that the users work on within the document window is not lost.

    Benefits

    • Document windows allow each program to load into memory just one time. This helps to save on memory and CPU usage, freeing portions of those resources for other computing needs. By clicking on the 'window' text in the menu line, the user can easily switch back and forth between open documents without having to close one before opening another. Document windows all make copy and pasting from one program to another, such as inserting a picture into a word processing document.

    Warning

    • Although most computers have ample memory to have multiple document windows open at the same time, if too many are open, it may cause the computer to slow down or stop responding to commands. The best solution for this problem is to limit how many documents are open at the same time and to keep a check on the systems windows performance accessed by the Windows Task Manager.
