What is a Thesis Paragraph?

A thesis paragraph is traditionally the first paragraph in an essay or research paper. It contains the information that introduces the reader to the purpose of the paper. When written correctly, it should also express the author's intent in writing the body of text. While it should be carefully constructed to pique the reader's interest, it is more important that the thesis paragraph be written clearly and concisely. Passive voice, redundancies and vague definitions should be avoided.

  1. Function

    • The function of the thesis paragraph is to house the thesis, which is the aspect of a work that clearly defines the argument expressed in the paper. The thesis paragraph can range in size and scope, but it should always introduce the reader to the purpose of a body of text.

    Benefits

    • Thesis paragraphs are beneficial to both the reader and the writer of a text. It is beneficial for the reader because it helps to understand what idea will be expressed within the course of a text. It also helps the reader decide if they want to continue reading, rather than waste time reading a text that has nothing to do with the information they are trying to collect. It is also beneficial for the writer of the text. This is because it helps the writer stay focused and on track when composing the text. A clearly defined thesis paragraph will help set the parameters for the rest of the text so the writer is better able to avoid wandering off topic over the course of the work.

    Features

    • All thesis paragraphs contain some introduction to ease the transition to the thesis statement. This helps to create context for the argument. The actual thesis statement can be anywhere from one sentence long to several paragraphs, depending on what argument the body of work centers on. Even with some information to orient the reader when offering the thesis statement, the paragraph should always be pithy and marked by simple readability. It should never confuse the reader or let the reader wonder about the purpose of a work.

    Misconceptions

    • There is a misconception that a thesis paragraph is always one paragraph long. Actually, the term thesis paragraph can really extend from just a few sentences to several pages, depending on what the body of work addresses. As long as the thesis paragraph clearly defines the purpose of a text, length is not really an important factor. There also is a misconception among writers that the thesis paragraph is always the introduction. Often the thesis paragraph will precede or follow an introduction, therefore it is not true that the thesis paragraph is always introductory to a body of work.

    Warning

    • It is important to avoid oversimplifying your thesis statement for the purpose of the thesis paragraph. It anchors the purpose of your paper, so a vague thesis can have the tendency to lose meaning on a reader. Similarly, it is also important to avoid including too much in the thesis. The remaining parts of the body of work should properly address the information posed in the thesis paragraph. One last warning is to fight the tendency to simply restate the thesis paragraph as a conclusion to the body of work. This should be avoided because it can leave the work seeming redundant.
