About Frizzy Hair

Whether your hair is straight, wavy, or curly, frizz can be a frustrating problem. However, for those with naturally curly or African American hair, it can be a consistent challenge. In fact, hairstylists say that the number one complaint they receive from curly haired individuals is that their hair is too frizzy. There are a number of ways to control frizz, both natural and product based.

    Identification

  1. While frizz is more prominent in curly hair, anyone with significant hair damage can experience it. Frizz occurs when the hair shaft is raised due to damage from processing the hair or use of styling products or devices. Most of the issues that cause frizz (or are directly related to it) cause the hair to be dry and brittle.
Nourishing the hair with conditioners or masques is a good way to combat frizz. Growing hair longer can also help to combat frizzy hair if hair is well cared for, as the length helps to add weight to your curls. However, even with longer hair, you may still need styling products to help control frizz.
  2. Function

  3. NaturallyCurly.com offers a hair washing method that helps to combat frizz. It's called the No Poo Method, and involves skipping the shampoo step when washing your hair, at least some of the time.
This method doesn't work well for straight-haired folks, but for those of us with curly locks, it's a definite frizz buster. It's important to skip the silicone based de-frizzing products when trying this method, as they require shampooing for removal and can cause product buildup, which can lead to hair breakage and dullness.
  4. Effects

  5. Another frizz-fighting option is to use a micro-fiber towel after your shower. Once you've washed your hair, squeeze out the excess moisture and apply any products you use. Then, wrap your hair in a micro-fiber towel for up to an hour.
The micro-fiber will quickly wick the water from your hair and once you take the towel off, your hair will quickly dry into glossy, smooth curls. This method works wonders, but take note: while you'll notice an immediate improvement, the full effect won't be experienced for a week or two. For a cheaper option to a micro-fiber towel, an old t-shirt works just as well.
  6. Warning

  7. Overstyling curly hair will cause excessive frizz. That is, straightening and blow-drying the hair on a daily basis will cause extreme damage for curly hair. Limit the amount of heat styling you use to special occasions. Washing curly hair daily will strip it of important oils needed to keep your curls smooth. Instead, wash it every other day, and place it loosely on top of your head or wrap in a scarf to keep your curls fresh while you sleep.
  8. Expert Insight

  9. According to Paco Camp, stylist to stars like Gloria Estefan and Ivana Trump, the best advice for combating frizz is to embrace your natural hair texture. He thinks women need to understand that they can be beautiful no matter what their hair texture is, and reminds us that "Women tend to become fixated on whatever the media is portraying to be 'in.' " Also, women can learn how to work with their curly hair so that they can wear it well.
