About Chunky Hair Highlights

Chunky highlights are patches of color that are placed into someone's hair in order to create a hairstyle and make a fashion statement. Typically done by a cosmetologist or professional hair colorist, chunky highlights add an element of drama to the hair in a variety of colors and styles.

    History

  1. Chunky highlights evolved from the 1990s and started off in short hair styles in both women and men. The big-hair look was winding down and more people were looking for more dramatic flair when it came to styling their hair. Highlighted hair had been popular before the 1990s, but hair designers decided to take things to a new level as they created looks that attracted younger and older people of both sexes.
  2. Identification

  3. Identifying someone with chunky highlights is done by looking for different shades of texture within the hair and detecting a color typically lighter than the hair color surrounding the highlights. If the color is darker than the hair color it would be considered lowlights, which is usually a combination of blond hair on the top layer with dark black color strands underneath the hair. Chunky highlights can be any hair color that is lighter than the base color.
  4. Types

  5. There are different types of chunky highlights. One of them being the lightened colors that take up small chunky portions of just one section of the hair, such as the bangs or the ends of the hair. This is popular in men and women who want to highlight their face or create some flair on the edges of the hair. All-over chunky highlights tend to be the most popular and are a great way to add more color and lighter effects to the hair without bleaching the hair completely. Rather than subtle differences in color, chunky highlights can make a statement with the bold differences and change in the appearance of the hair.
  6. Features

  7. Chunky highlights can easily be used to grow out grays or roots so that one can feel confident while going through the grow-out process. Chunky highlights also have the added benefit of being a permanent piece of hair color and can only be removed by cutting them out of the hair. Chunky highlights can also make hair look fuller, which is beneficial to those with thinning hair.
  8. Warning

  9. Getting chunky highlights should only be performed by a salon professional who has had extensive experience with color and knows how to mix and match the right colors for the client. A highlighting job, in which the colors have been left on too long or blotched due to poor alignment within the hair, can ruin a hairstyle and cause great despair for the client.
