About Rust Prevention
Given time, any iron object will rust. With the right conditions, rust can happen rapidly, destroying not only the aesthetic quality of an object, but the structural integrity as well. Anything with iron that spends a lot of time outside has an added risk of rusting. Items ranging from vehicles to bike chains are candidates for rusting. Rust prevention is vital in protecting valuable structures, tools and machinery.

Galvanizing is the process of dipping iron or steel objects in zinc to coat and protect it from the elements. Galvanized steel is often used in construction materials to extend the life of an object.

Vehicles are prime targets for rust and the place oxidation or rusting occurs most often is hidden from view. The undercarriage of a vehicle is exposed to water, hot and cold weather conditions and in the case of northern climates, salt. Salt is used on roadways to prevent skidding on roads. This same salt speeds the rusting process and breaks down metal from the bottom up. Since the underside of a vehicle usually doesn't have paint, that area is highly susceptible to oxidation. Car dealerships and auto body shops offer undercarriage protection in the form of sealants specialized in preventing salt and water corrosion. It's recommended that vehicles in wintry climates have sealant applied to a vehicle once a year.

Commercial sealants for rust prevention are available at all hardware stores and some auto parts shops. These sealants create a long-lasting barrier between the metal and corrosives. These sealants protect everything from building supplies to tools in the garage. The sealants are available in spray cans for smaller items to gallon buckets for larger areas.
