How to Make a Faux Fur Hat for Kids

When those first snowflakes start to float down from the cold winter sky, it's time to get busy making some warm and fuzzy winter gear. Prepare yourself for a big bear hug from your special little person when they lay eyes on this cute little faux fur hat made especially for them. You might even hear a squeal of delight when they notice the little ears. Just grab a 1/4-yard of faux fur and fleece and you'll be on your way. Seriously, what's not to love about a faux fur hat with ears when it's super cold outside?

Things You'll Need

  • 1/2-yard faux fur (for the outer hat)

  • 1/2-yard fleece (for the hat lining)

  • Hat pattern or draw your own

  • Pins

  • Sharp scissors

  • Sewing machine

Step 1

Fold the faux fur in half. Place the main hat pattern on the fold and the ear pattern close by. Pin in place. Cut around the pattern pieces.

Step 2

Fold the fleece in half, pin the hat pattern to the fold and the ear pattern close by. Cut out both pieces just as you cut the faux fur pieces. Remove the paper pattern pieces.

Step 3

Pin the fleece and faux fur ear pieces with right sides together and sew with a zig zag stitch, leaving the straight edge side open.

Step 4

Turn the ears right side out.

Step 5

Fold the ends of the straight side toward the center and pin in place to create an ear shape. Set these aside for later.

Step 6

Fold the fleece and faux fur in half. Pin and sew along the back and the front of the hat (the sewing lines are shown with dotted lines in the picture).

Step 7

Open the hat and fold it so the front is facing toward you. The top of the hat will be open. Place the ears with the front of the ear facing the front of the hat. Move the ears down and pin them to the body of the hat, lining up the raw edges of the ears with the raw edges of the hat. Pin and sew through all three layers.

Step 8

Open the fleece lining so the front of the hat is facing toward you. Pin and sew the top edge with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Leave the lining inside out. Turn the faux fur hat piece right side out.

Step 9

Place the faux fur piece inside the fleece lining piece so the right sides are together and the front, back and sides are lined up.

Step 10

Pin and sew the fleece lining to the faux fur piece and leave a 4 inch opening in the back.

Step 11

Pull the hat through the opening to turn it right side out. Tuck the fleece lining inside the faux fur.

Step 12

Pin the opening closed and topstitch around the hat.
