Ozone Generator Odor Removal

Professionals, whose job it is to tackle serious odor problems, such as those that follow a fire or flood commonly use ozone generators to get the job done. Hotels and used car dealers use ozone generators to reduce embedded odors caused by cigarette smoking. However, ozone is a lung irritant and can pose serious health problems if your ozone generator is used improperly.

To Rent or to Buy

  • Decide, based on what has caused your odor problem, whether to buy or rent an ozone generator. Ozone generators produce ozone electronically from oxygen in the air. The ozone oxidizes odor molecules and reduces them to odorless compounds. While some odors can never be eliminated fully, the organic molecules that are altered by ozone generators are permanently eliminated as a cause of odor.

Follow Manufactuer's Instructions

  • Follow all manufacturer's instructions. All ozone generators carry warnings about misuse. Ozone generators cannot be used continuously or in inhabited areas. They are most effective when used at settings that produce ozone levels that are too high to breathe safely. Since the ozone is unstable and reverts quickly back to oxygen, it makes sense to use the generators in closed spaces that can be kept vacant until the ozone returns to a safe level.

All machines are different, but most come equipped with a timer to allow the machine to be turned on and off automatically so that the operator need not be present when ozone is being emitted. Most machines have varied settings for the rate at which ozone is to be generated and released into the air; depending primarily on the size of the space you are treating. Depending on the sophistication of your unit, it may be equipped with alarms, ozone and oxygen detection monitors and automatic shutoff systems. These are all triggered when conditions for operation, such as ambient air temperature, make continued operation unexpectedly unsafe.

Be Alert

  • Be alert to the characteristic of bleach like odor, which would indicate unsafe concentrated ozone. The Florida Department of Health states that ozone generators should not be used to eradicate mold and no one should expose themselves or others to ozone on purpose. If you decide to use an ozone generators in your home, consider purchasing an ozone detector to help determine when the treated area is safe. Remember that ozone at any level is especially dangerous for those who suffers from asthma or other respiratory diseases.
