Intex above-ground swimming pools come in four styles -- easy set, metal frame, oval frame and ultra frame -- and range from 8 to 24 feet in diameter so they can fit various backyard sizes. These types of pools are easy to set up and use but still need regular maintenance to keep the water clean and increase the life expectancy of the pool and equipment.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Step 1

Intex above-ground pools should be cleaned and maintained every day. Pool owners should attach the appropriate pump and filter system to the Intex pool to keep the water filtered and clean and add daily chlorine tablets to prevent the growth of bacteria and algae. Use a large brush designed for pools and brush along the bottom and sides of the pool to prevent algae buildup, which creates a slippery surface. If excessive algae stains occur on the Intex pool liner, drain the pool and scrub the liner with a large brush with water and mild detergent; thoroughly dry the liner before refilling it with water. For easy cleaning of the pool surface, use a hand-held pool vacuum with a skimmer bag to remove debris from the water.

Step 2

Pool owners should "shock" the pool water once a week -- or more frequently if the pool is used excessively. Shocking the pool water is performed by introducing lots of chemicals to the water at once to kill bacteria. Swimmers should wait at least one hour after shocking before swimming to prevent skin irritations. Replace the filter in the pool pump at least every two weeks to ensure proper water filtration. Also clean the pool ladder, as algae and bacteria can accumulate on steps and create a slippery surface. Intex pools that are 15-feet wide and wider require a ladder.

Step 3

Above-ground Intex swimming pools can be left up year-round in temperate climates. If the pool needs to be dismantled, clean, drain and thoroughly dry all surfaces. Sprinkle all surfaces with talcum powder to prevent the vinyl liners from sticking together and roll the pool to prevent creases. Store it in a dry place until it's ready to use again.

Tip

Test the water before using the pool with a pH strip designed specifically for swimming pool water; balanced pool water has a pH level between 7.4 and 7.6. Use a pool cover designed to fit your specific Intex pool to keep the water free from debris such leaves.

Warning

Keep pool chemicals out of children's reach. Install a pool safety fence around the pool if young children live in the home or the yard is unfenced. Place a large tarp or ground cloth under the Intex pool before setting it up if your yard contains Bermuda or St. Augustine grass. These hardy grasses can potentially grow through the bottom of the Intex liner.
