Toyota Highlander Roof Rack Installation

A roof rack is a movable storage device that can be installed on the roof of a vehicle. Available in a number of sizes and brand names, racks are a great way to make the journey fun- filled, as the space inside the vehicle can be saved for more people. A roof rack can be used to mount anything from a kayak to a bicycle. A roof rack on a Toyota highlander can be installed in a few simple steps. Toyota does not offer factory-fitted roof racks for this model; hence, the installation has to be done manually.

Choosing a Model & Preparingg

  • There are several models and makes of roof racks available on the market. The size and shape depend on the model of vehicle for which the roof racks are to be installed. For instance, a particular year’s model may have a slightly changed set of body dimensions. According to Rack Attack, Thule is one preferred brand of roof racks used on Toyota Highlanders; their range of racks can provide great space and ease of mounting. Depending on your choice, these can be installed with the help of some simple tools. To mount the roof rack, you need four load bars, which are specific to the model and have to be bought independently of the vehicle, at an accessories shop; and four each of railing feet, end caps and handle assemblies.

Attaching the Rack

  • First, install the two load bars, which have to be placed parallel to the vehicle. Slide these load bars into the foot unit in such a way that the hinges look out into the rear end of the vehicle. The foot unit is a device that is made of fiber. Holding the bars and consisting of straps, this unit is what attaches the roof of the vehicle to the bars of the roof rack. Each bar has open ends, into which you have to push the end caps. This has to be done for both load bars, which are locked by this action.

Finishing Up

  • The straps have to be slipped under the roof rack and secured by tying, as if they were a thread or a rope binding the object. The straps of the foot unit, of which there are four in each of the corners of the bars, have to be fastened using a wrench. This is best done in a clockwise direction. This attaches the foot to the roof of the vehicle. Next, the handle assembly has to be snugly fitted into the hole directly below the strap-tightening hole, so that it snaps into position. From here, the roof rack is ready for use.
