Enabling Java means making sure Java is installed on the computer you're using and that the browser you're using is set to allow Java programs to run. Java is a general purpose program that is used on the web to provide different kinds of services. The following explains how to enable Java and why you might want to do this.
Reasons to enable Java
You might want to enable Java, if, for example, you find an online game that you're interested in trying out or a friend has mentioned a chat room you want to see but when you try to run the game or enter the chat room you get a message that says something like, "It seems Java is not enabled on your computer." This may mean that Java is not enabled on your computer or a setting inside your browser won't allow Java to run. There's also a possibility, if this is the first time you're running a Java applet, that the Java Run Time environment (JRE) isn't installed on your computer. This is a one time task, similar to installing the Adobe Flash player to display animations. It is easy to install.
Why do I have do download Java?
The browser's job is to interpret (display) web pages written in HTML, or XHTML and CSS. When a browser encounters other types of content such as animations, sound, movies and documents, it calls on other "interpreters," or programs, to deal with other types of code. Sometimes these are turned off by default because they can be entry points for potential security compromises.
