Butterflies are popular additions to centerpieces for parties, holiday gatherings and receptions. Part of the popularity of butterflies lies in the symbolism that is connected to them. A butterfly represents a free spirit and exhibits awesome beauty as it flies. Butterflies of many different shapes, sizes and colors are readily available to purchase for use in creating beautiful centerpieces. When butterflies are paired with colorful flowers in a centerpiece the finished effect is natural, yet breathtaking.
Due to the popularity of butterflies, there are many different options and ideas for creating the butterflies for a centerpiece. Craft stores sell butterflies made out of brightly colored feathers that are attached to wires. The wires can be inserted into the centerpiece and the feather butterflies appear to be flitting around the centerpiece. Floral websites and stores also sell butterflies that are similar to the feather butterflies sold in craft stores, except they are available in a variety of sizes. You also may find butterflies made from silk.
Small helium-filled butterfly balloons that are weighted can be placed in the middle of the centerpiece for another interesting butterfly idea.
Make confetti out of brightly colored paper and a butterfly-shaped paper punch. Sprinkle this confetti on the tables around the outer perimeters of each centerpiece.
In keeping with the butterfly theme, flowers are a natural accompaniment in a butterfly centerpiece. Either silk or real flowers can be placed in the middle of the centerpiece with feather or silk butterflies on wires stuck into the floral foam that holds the flowers. This will make them appear to be flitting around the flowers. Alternately, the flowers can be placed on a pedestal to give them more height. Greenery can be added at the base of the pedestal.
Another idea is to have flowers at the base of the pedestal. Place an upside-down fishbowl on the top of the pedestal, and underneath the fishbowl place some floral foam (concealed by greenery) with an assortment of feather or silk butterflies inserted into the foam. Under the fishbowl the butterflies appear to be flying.
Use a clear glass floating candle bowl in the center of each table. On each candle bowl paint small, brightly colored butterflies with enamel paint. Butterflies are not difficult to paint, and there are instruction books that teach painting techniques for painting butterflies. Find these instruction books at most craft stores. It also is possible to find these floating candle bowls with butterflies already added to them by shopping online. Add water and flower-shaped candles to the floating candle bowls for a simple, yet elegant, centerpiece.
