The Best Way to Ship Costume Jewelery

Shipping costume jewelry--whether handmade, vintage or new--to a customer is not a difficult process, but both buyer and seller will want to make sure the pieces arrive at the new home undamaged and in one piece. Read on for some tips on shipping delicate items.

Packing Materials

  • Have some basic packing materials on hand to ensure the item is properly packed to guarantee safe arrival. Small sturdy boxes, bubble wrap or packing peanuts, paper packing material, strong tape and return address labels are necessities. Make sure the outer box is stiff and strong; inner boxes to hold the jewelry can be smaller and thinner.

Packing the Jewelry

  • Pack the item of jewelry in a box sized to fit--this means a ring box for a ring or earrings, a bracelet box for a bracelet or a larger flat box for a necklace. For the sake of presentation for the customer, wrap the piece in tissue paper and seal with a sticker or a piece of decorative tape. It is not necessary to wrap the inner jewelry box in decorative paper, but it makes a nice statement when opened. Make sure the jewelry does not shake or move in its box; if it does, add more tissue paper inside the jewelry box. Many stores also throw in a business card or discount coupon for the customer; this is optional but appreciated by the buyer.

Packing the Mailing Box

  • The United States Postal Service advises its customers to use foam (peanuts) or plastic (bubble wrap) when packing fragile items for mailing. It advises placing the cushioning all around the item to be mailed, making sure it is completely surrounded inside the outer mailing box. Using both foam or plastic and an outer layer of newspaper is also a good idea. "Careful packaging is the best way to safeguard your valuable items against damage," USPS says on its website. Marking the outside of the box as "Fragile" also makes the postal sorters and delivery people aware to handle the package with care.

Seal and Send

  • Secure the outside of the box with strong, clear tape and make sure all openings are properly closed. Be sure to clearly print the recipient's address on the box and also include a return address. The USPS offers a number of insurance options, delivery confirmation so the sender can track the item and also a wide variety of delivery methods that also include confirmation and delivery options.
