Outdoor Flooring Options

Many options present themselves when it comes to deciding what kind of flooring you'd like to have outdoors. You'll need to weigh factors including safety, maintenance and your budget. However, outdoor flooring does allow for both functionality and décor, so choosing the type that suits your needs should not be difficult if you know what you're looking for.

  • Wood flooring is a popular choice, especially for homes with outdoor patios, decks and areas around an outdoor pool. Wood lasts a long time and goes with just about everything in the surroundings, such as plants and furniture. While it's easily available and fairly easily maintained, wood can be quite costly. Wooden flooring does, however, withstand all weather conditions such as heat, rain and snow.

The most commonly used wooden flooring for the outdoors are teak, ipe, eucalyptus, western red cedar, redwood and mahogany. These also have other uses, such as for fencing, decks and walkways.

Ceramic Tiles

  • Ceramic tiles are often used in patios because they are easy to install and come in a wide variety of colors. In addition, they last a long time, are fairly inexpensive and easy to clean. Ceramic tiles, however, become slippery when wet, so special care needs to be taken to make sure that people walking on the tiles don't slip and fall. As with wooden flooring, ceramic tiles also withstand all weather conditions.

Rubber Tiles

  • Rubber tiles are mostly chosen for outdoor flooring for elderly homeowners or for families with children that often play outdoors. Rubber tiles are safe and provide good traction so you don't slip or fall and therefore avoid getting hurt or seriously injured. In addition, rubber tiles are inexpensive, easy to install and last a long time. Like ceramic tiles, rubber tiles also come in different colors so there are many options to choose from. Although rubber can withstand weather conditions, it is not the best option in places where it often rains, as water can seep between the cracks, causing the glue used to adhere the rubber to lose its adhesiveness. However, since they are inexpensive and can be easily installed, pieces can be bought separately and installed when needed.

  • Concrete is often chosen as outdoor flooring because it's one of the most inexpensive options. Concrete flooring lasts a long time, can withstand all weather conditions and can even be painted or stained to meet specific color needs. Additionally, concrete can also be decorated by stamping prints such as leaves and flowers which leaves a design imprint. As with ceramic tiles, however, caution needs to be taken when concrete flooring is wet because it becomes very slippery.

  • Using bricks as outdoor flooring is another popular choice because it is relatively inexpensive and withstands all weather conditions. Because of i's texture, brick is naturally slip resistant when wet. Brick tiles are also easy to install and to clean. Furthermore, they can be installed using different patterns, such as basket weave or herringbone, and you can also lay brick tiles in a circular pattern.
