- Begin researching flowers that complement your wedding colors. Check out different sized and shaped flowers and decide if you want to use all of one color or if you want to use a variety of colors in your bouquet. If you are going to go with just one color, choose different sized flowers of varying hues that will add dimension to your finished bouquet. If you decide to use a few different colored flowers in your bouquet, it is wise to purchase them locally so you can see how the colors will complement each other once arranged. You will want to purchase more main, secondary, greenery and filler flowers than you think you will need since it is always best to have some left over than to not have enough. You can always use the leftover flowers for reception decorations.
- You will need a bouquet holder, heavy-duty scissors, glue gun and glue sticks and accessories such as beads, tulle and ribbon. You will probably also want to invest in a bouquet stand, which you can use to arrange your bouquet and to also display your bouquet on your bride's table.
- Discard any unsightly or damaged flower petals and trim off excess foliage and thorns. Cut the edges of your flower stems, at an angle, by at least 2 inches, right before you arrange your bouquet.
- Place your bouquet holder into your bouquet stand. Make a cross shape by placing four of your main flowers around your holder's outer edges and then placing one of your main flowers into the center. This will give you an idea of where to begin placing the rest of the flowers. A good strategy to use is to shape four more main flowers into a square around the middle main flower and then to repeat the sequence with your secondary flowers and greenery until you see a definite pattern emerging. You can then decide where your accessories will go and fasten them onto your flowers using your glue gun. Once your bouquet is finished, you can wrap the holder with tulle or ribbon or purchase a bouquet collar that matches your bouquet and ties in your wedding theme.
