How to Remove Rounded Lug Nuts

by Russell Wood

Having a rounded off lug nut on your wheel can be a bit frustrating because, most times, no matter what you do, you can't get the lug nut off and instead tend to round off the lug nut even more. Removing the lug nut can be done, but to do it, you'll need a set of 1/2-inch sockets that you don't care about because you'll lose the socket in the process.

Step 1

Determine what size socket will fit over the rounded off lug nut. Then pick one size smaller and attempt to fit it onto the lug nut. You want a tight fit but not so tight that it won't go over the lug at all.

Step 2

Hold the socket over the rounded lug nut using one hand then pound the end of it using the sledgehammer. Pound lightly at first to seat the socket over the lug nut then hit it hard until the socket is solidly joined with the lug nut. Make sure there is no play in the socket.

Step 3

Attach the 1/2-inch ratchet to the socket on the lug nut then turn the ratchet counterclockwise to remove it from the wheel lug.
