"Hi my name is Chris Dupre and I am an electric guitar instructor and in this segment we're going to be talking about alternative guitar tuning more specifically drop tuning. What drop tuning is is your low E string gets dropped a full step in this case to a D string I'm sorry a D note that is. You can do it a couple of ways with an electronic tuner. You can drop it down until it reads the note D. In this case I am going to use it by ear going by my other D string. Now what this does it just kind of enables me to play a six string D chord and it also gives a much deeper richer sound to that D chord. It is commonly used in a lot of heavier band's music as well because it enables you to do one finger power chords in this case with a little game instead of doing a power chord typically like this shape, you are now because this note has been moved up here you can now do a one fingered power chord. It also enables you to play a much more fuller power chord using more of the strings than just those and in that case I am playing a five string power chord and that's just a little about alternative drop D tuning."
