"Hello my name is David Kingery and I am a professional vocal coach here in Miami, Florida. In this clip we are going to talk about how to harmonize. Harmonizing is singing either above or below the original melody within the chord structure of the song and making it sound good. One of the first keys to good harmonizing is knowing your song. If you are going to harmonize within a song that you are singing or with another singer you need to know what the original melody is and what the chord structure is. That helps a lot. What if you are a beginner and you are not quite sure how to improvise harmonies we can start with some very easy exercises that I will demonstrate with my student here. We'll sing a short little tune, short little pattern first of all, and then I'll harmonize with you and then I'll have you try it as well. Just sing for me la, la, la. La, la, la. Now I will harmonize with you. Sing the same thing. (La, la, la). Lets do it without the piano. (La, la, la). That is singing a third above the original melody and that's a simple little harmony. Lets switch it around. I will sing la, la, la in the melody and you try to harmonize. Ready here is my note. Here's your note. (La, la, la). Very good, that is one simple way to learn a melody and to work on harmonies. Once again this has been David Kingery thank you for watching."
