"Hi my name is Chris Behrens with Summerhays Music, and we're going to talk today about how to clean a flute. There are a couple of different ways to clean your flute. You can do it on your own everyday after you play, and I'm going to show you that in just a minute. Or you can take it into your local repair shop that services flutes, and they can clean it thoroughly for you inside and out. After you each time you get done playing your flute, you need to clean it before you put it away. So you'll need a flute cleaning rod and a flute cleaning cloth. And how it works is you take this cloth and you'll feed about half of it through the flute cleaning rod, that ways it's half way through. Then you will take that and run it through each part of the flute. So we'll do the foot joint first, run it through a couple of times. We'll run it through the head joint a couple of times, making sure we get all the wetness, saliva out of there. And then last but not least, we'll clean the main body. We'll go on this end and then do it again on the other end, just to make sure we get it all. For cleaning the outside of the flute, depending on if you have a nickel plated flute or silver plated flute. You can buy the appropriate polishing cloths for those. You can use your polish cloth to clean the outside of the flute to get all the dirt and grime and fingerprints off of it."
