"Hi, I'm Jay French, from Jay French Studios.com. Today I'm going to teach you how to draw clear glass with Conte crayon. Now, one of the tricks to this, we're going to start with a dark edge, and we're going to actually do a wine glass. And hopefully it'll be somewhat even. Glass is always tricky because you can mostly see through it, but you can obviously see it's presence. And part of the trick is showing what's there by negative space, by what you don't see, and what actually shows up in the visual realm. We're actually going to have this full of liquid, we're going to give it some wine. Remember to always have...when you can see your liquid, it is separated from the edge. You will actually be able to see the thickness of the glass. I've made this a rather thick glass here. And you're...you will still get some impression beyond that of that edge. So from here, of course, we're not going to do a color, you'll see the shadow of the liquid itself. Now, we're not going to bother with what's behind it, because that would be showing through, but we're not going to mess with it. We want this to be good, and, filled with value here. The top's going to have a lighter value. And you can use that by darkening up the edge that leads up to the top more. We can throw in some bubbles, 'cause even water will bubble some. Now you can use your whites here to get some more highlights, or just blend, especially on your bubbles, they won't show up a whole lot. And you'll see that white edge all along here, along the bottom. You want some depth there as well. Of course, the main trick to drawing glass in Conte, is just, or in any kind of pastel or colored pencil, is to show the highlights. And get the shadow of this object that's reflecting across the base of it. And something always to remember is what is....what is casting a shadow upon itself. That's good in figure drawing, that's good in any kind of drawing. Still life, etcetera. And that's a basic lesson of how to draw a glass in Conte crayon."
