Creating Abstract Art: Stretching a Subject

Another approach is to look at your subject matter and think, what would happen if you distorted it? If you somehow pulled it out of kilter and you have all kinds of ways of doing this. What I chose in this instance was, I came over to his area here--the hip bone area. And, I said "well, you know, those are interesting shapes." I mean, I really like what's happening in there. But, how would you distort that? One way might be just to stretch it out. You know, I just made it a whole lot longer. And suddenly, you know, if you start to think about this being a pelvic bone. You know, if you start to identify it as a pelvic bone and you see how long it is, you then sort of know the head goes to "what is the person going to look like with a stretched out pelvis like that?" So, you might want to work on this kind of distortion to get people to start to ask "what if?" Because, part of art is thinking about the possibilities. So, distortion is a way to start the ball rolling.
