Joel Hickerson, grindog.com. Today we're going to draw a man. First, to start off with you want to draw the basic elements of a man. Think about where you want to put him on the page. So start with a line, this is an action line. It's just going to be standing there. It doesn't need to move one way or the other. And you draw a head, which could be an oval. You draw where his shoulders might be and you also draw where his hips might be. Now his shoulders are going to be wider than his hips. I like to put circles, little circles where the joints are. Now bring the legs down, let's have joints for knees, joints for ankles, hands, joint for an elbow, hand would be there, kind of an elliptical element, and the elbow joint, hands. O.k., and then start fleshing them out. This is a man so his hips are going to be a little lower on the torso than a womans. Now you start with a man, eyes, nose, mouth, neck, start fleshing it out. The body is going to be more of an ellipse. He can be a strong man if you make the top of the ellipse wider than the bottom part of the ellipse. Or if you want to make him dumpy, reverser it, then he can have a belly. Give him a pair of pants, this is the easiest way. And as you're drawing this guy, make sure you do your beginning picture in pencil, as you draw your construction lines so you can come back and erase them and as you do your marker. O.k., there's are man, he's a man. He might be wearing a base ball cap. Give him some thumbs, shoes for feet. And come back with your marker now that you've got the basic elements and you can start fleshing him out. Make a smooth transition on the face, nice baseball cap, neck, collar, shoulders. He's wearing a long sleeve shirt today. Keep it simple, and a belt if you want to. That's pretty much the basic elements of our man. And if you've done right, sketched lightly, it should be very easy to come back and erase your construction lines so that you just have the lines you wanted to keep. And here you can come back with your pencil and add some shadows and different things that you might want to use to kind of flesh him out and make him look a little better. Now is also a good time to add color. And that's how you draw a man.
