Joel Hickerson, grindog.com. Today we are going to draw a tulip. The first thing you do is you start with the top of your tulip and you draw a shape to kind of hold the place of that. Well the with the tulip it is good as an ellipse. You are going to end up and what you will do is you will cut off the top of this ellipse and then draw petals. A tulip has very soft flowy sort of petals always almost like a cup. Draw that and then you can draw a stem going down from there. A tulip may also be the edge of the petals and as you do this I'd like to start with a pencil and draw my construction lines very light. Don't worry about erasing until you are done but the pencil is very forgiving because you can erase anything you don't need. So that's our basic construction elements of our tulip and then I like to come back with a marker or a dark colored pencil and just mark over the lines that I want to keep. I trace this line around the edge of our tulip and at this point I can correct lines that I may have not liked how they came out the first time. Mark the stem and now I've done a good job on this one. Now with your construction lines it should be very easy to come back and erase the lines that you don't want any more and you don't want to keep. Once you have erased your construction lines, now is the time you want to color or shade the drawing to make it look even more like a tulip. Come in and you have a little shading. It might give it a little bit of depth this way. And that is a good basic start to our tulip. That's how you draw a tulip.
