Being a singer with a unique voice is very important if you want to connect to an audience. Being memorable is very important and if you are not unique you are not memorable they are not going to remember you. There are certain things that you can control. There are certain things you can't. One of those things is tone that you can't really control too much. That's part of your anatomy, your voice box. There is a certain size to your voice, your throat, that kind of makes up the actual tone in the sound of your voice whether it be low or high, that's something that you are born with. You can kind of mess with it a bit, if you tighten your throat a bit you can actually get a little higher voice but generally you don't really want to mess with it too much. That makes you who you are is your tone but things that you can control would be the way you pronounce words the way you pronounce in particular your vowel sounds. There are different vocalists that have different ways of pronouncing your vowels. Like take Sarah McLaughlin for example. She kind of has this "you never just can last" you know like kind of ah sound to her ah's like it should be can't and it should be last, not last you know, so there is a little difference in the way she enunciates and the way she pronounces definitely her vowels. You can't really do much with consonants but vowels you can kind of mess with, the same thing with Eddie Vedder or Pearl Jam you know they kind of have that er or Creed but that is basically what it comes down to is finding something that you are comfortable with. You can take pretty much all your inspirations, all your vocalists that you like and you don't think about it too much and it just kind of naturally comes out as far as your tone and the way you pronounce and all that stuff. So that's how you can create a unique tone.
