What is contemporary dance? Contemporary dance which is often called lyrical dance also, is not so much a specific dance technique as it is a compilation of different techniques based from modern dance. Contemporary dance involves integrating the mind body spirit connection with the dance movements. Often times a contemporary dancer will dance barefoot. There's a huge emotional connection to this style of dance that they do. There's also a lot of floor work involved. Unlike in traditional ballet which includes much more stricter, more beautiful lines, the contemporary dancer will use gravity to pull them down closer to the level of the floor. It is also important to note that a lot of improvisational skills are used in a contemporary dance form. Improvisation meaning that the dancer uses whatever they feel at that moment to express the mood of the dance piece itself. There are several different forms of contemporary dance and a contemporary dance form here in the United States does differ from that of the European and Australian contemporary dance forms.
