My name is Niall O'Leary from the Niall O'Leary School of Irish Dance in New York City and today I'm demonstrating intermediate Irish step dancing. This is a combination that's known as a butterfly. We're doing a jump and we're going to switch feet. Now, you could do this in soft shoes, but if I were wearing my soft shoes this would be a butterfly. But, because I'm wearing my hard shoes it's not enough just to jump off the floor and twist your ankles to look good. You want to get two sounds, you definitely want to get one sound which you would be getting with heels, but it would be nice if you would also get your toes to meet up in mid air of course. So let's go for the heels one first. How did I do that? It so happened that I switched feet and as I was bringing the right foot back, my heels were aligned as I brought my heels back in. So I'm putting my heels apart and then they snap back in and it so happens they're aligned I make a sound. Now, to get the toe sound you just want to point your toes and you want to hit your toes first before you hit your heels. Like this, so there you can see I got two sounds, toes and heels.
