People have been sewing their own clothing, bedding, and upholstery since practically the beginning of time. In fact, sewing predates the weaving of cloth, and was nearly universal among Paleolithic human populations. Sewing is the basic act of using a needle and thread to stitch together cloth, leather, furs or other material to produce a variety of household items. Today, most sewing is done by industrial sewing machines, however many people continue to sew for themselves, repairing clothes, mending seams, or making simple items like curtains or table cloths.

"Hi, welcome to Expert Village, I'm Gretchen Soares and today we're going to make a fancy four patch table runner. Okay, in this clip we're going to talk about patterns and quilt patterns and how to choose what you're doing. I have tons of books on quilting, or you can go to the library or you can also look quilt patterns up on line. You can Google quilt patterns and come up with hundreds of different choices. And I like to look through and just see what they are and match it to what I have in my mind for a project we're using. There's all different choices. A lot of these that you'll notice are working with straight lines. What we're going to be doing today is strip quilting, so we do want straight lines. It's very hard to do curve lines with a strip of fabric. So this again is a great pattern because you can cut it down and make it narrower for a table cloth. I've picked a pattern and actually when I'm using a pattern a lot I put it on a little template so that I can have it with me. It's easy, it's laminated with some clear contact paper so that I can carry this with me and see what I'm doing. I like to have a visual on my projects. So we picked the fancy four patch pattern today for our table runner."
