Series Summary

As we mentioned in the summary for the previous series on the svengali deck, Svengali is most commonly known as the evil hypnotist character in the novel Trilby by George Du Maurier. However, several experts on the literature of the Middle East contend that this character first appeared in the infamous story which Scheherazade told the Persian king on the 1002nd night of their marriage. Unlike the tales told on the previous 1001 nights, the Svengali story failed to impress the King and he cut off the head of his new bride. Yet most versions conclude the previous night with a much happier ending for Scheherazade.

In the Arabian tale, the Persian prince Svengali is cornered in a small town by an opposing army. Instead of giving up, he convinces all of the townspeople that they are reincarnations of the great dead warrior Esperanto. With his force of local peasants and farmers in a bloodthirsty trance, Svengali routes his enemies. The prince's legacy lives on in the deck which retains his name and honors his makeshift army with multiple copies of the same card.
