Video: Filling Foreground Colors for Landscape Oil Painting

Hello. I'm Stevie Moore. Welcome to my studio here at The Artist Attic in Lexington, Kentucky. Alright now we're going to move a little bit into the foreground. We want a little bit darker colors and we want a little bit more high contrast. A little bit darker darks and lighter lights. I'm going to enter in some lavender and gray rock shadow and then some dark foliage here and here and a little bit back here as well in the back ground while we have the paint out. I'm going to use some of the blue and some of the green we've already gotten out. I'm going to add a little bit more white in and a little bit more liquin into back where our blue was. We're going to add a little bit of some darker blues in there. And play with some of these darker blues. And I'm going to add in a little bit of some of my earth tones. Some of my browns, maybe even a little bit of orange. Here's where the orange comes into play. It's great for making grays. Add some orange in there. Now we've got a nice interesting bluish gray. I'm just going to start working this in some of the darker areas in my foreground. We're going to have some dark cool colors in the foreground and I'm going to add in some warm colors. We're going to add in some reds as well here. Foreground gets the good treatment. Put a lot of color in there. Alright, just working in some of this dark gray. Mix a lot of different grays. Don't just stick with one gray. Maybe you want a little bluish gray. Maybe you want to add a little bit of ultramarine. And maybe a little dark red. Maybe make a little more purpley kind of gray. Add a little red in your gray. Now see how I've got a little bit more lavender shade of gray. I want shadowy areas. I'm going to stay away from some of the white. Get where the shadows hit these cliffs. And up here where you have some rock forms feel free to go ahead and add in some of their shadows with that color. Let's dot it with some uneven rocky textures. I'm using the flat brush right here. We can move in later with our round bristly brush and do an even better job here. I'm covering some of this. Now I need a lighter, lighter gray for some of this area. So I'm going to mix in with some of my Naples yellow. And I'm going to get kind of an interesting greenish gray now. All this can be mixed with some other colors. Mix in some white, I don't want to get too dark down there. See how I'm making horizontal brush strokes kind of following the contours of the shore line and the rocks that lay there. And overlapping a little bit into the area where the trees are. Of course a lot of this green is going to cover all this up. But it's always easier to cover up than it is to put under something. And then we also have a little bit of shadow coming up here at the top of this cliff here. We want to add in some effects of that as well. Now we're ready to move on to the greens. Now that we've kind of got a nice base layer of darker grays. What we'll do is switch these brushes here. So we don't have to clean. And I've got a nice brush I can work on the greens with. And I'm going to go ahead and get a nice bit of darker sap green to use for some of these more foreground plants. These will be the lightest parts of these plants here. And since these plants are intricate with lots of foliage we're not going to produce a lot of detail. I'm adding in some Meridian and Prussian green. A little darker rich color in the foreground area. A little bit more down here towards the base of this tree. And down here. I'm just looking for any remaining white areas we need to get some paint on. And we pretty much covered the entire canvas here with a layer of paint. Work in dark greens up here if you've got the time. Some of these darker trees are. This is all things we'll develop much more later. And you've got a canvas that's pretty well blocked in at this point.
