Series Summary

Artists don't generally have a reputation for being neat and well-organized. A more common mental image is that of a paint-covered bohemian with tubes of paint littering a studio that hasn't had a good cleaning in years. This set-up may work fine if you can keep track of all of your paints, but what happens when you just can't find that tube of International Klein blue during that crucial stage in the development of your masterwork? Or when you want to travel out to the meadow to paint outside? Do you really want to spend an hour rounding up all the paints you want to take with you? Having a place to store your paints will make you a more efficient painter and may even improve your paintings.

In this free wood craft project, our woodworking teacher will demonstrate how to construct a toolbox for your art supplies. Jon Olson shows you how to design your supply box from plywood, then demonstrates how to cut out each piece and join them together into an attractive wood toolbox.

"Hi, this is Jon and in this clip we will be formulating a design. I went on line and searched for some free toolbox plans, and came up with this picture with this set of plans. Now I really like the traditional style toolbox and I'm going to incorporate that design into my design of making a toolbox for art supplies. Now if we take a look at the end view, out toolbox is about 9 1/4 inches by about 12 inches high. Now if we take a look at the side of our toolbox, the height is about 12 inches and the length is about 20 inches. So it'd a pretty good size toolbox, and it's going to be able to hold a lot of art supplies. Now on the original picture we can see there's slot for a saw, and we have one large open area for all the tools. What we're going to do is we're not going to add that little slot in, and of course we're not going to have any tools in there. Instead we're going to put a series of dividers that we're going tot make inside our toolbox. And that's going to give us little different compartments for putting all our different art supplies."
