"JOEL SIEGEL: All right. So, the last approach to the drum that I want to talk about, and this is pretty much applicable only to the snare drum; sometimes the floor tom if you want to go for that as well, is the rim click. This is used for getting--a lot of times you'll use it in music when you're trying to get a softer sound or just a more mellow sound. It's used a lot in R&B, jazz, you'll find that you'll use it wherever you like pretty much. The rim click is when the bead of the stick is against the drum--excuse me--drumhead and towards the butt of the stick you're going to overlap the rim. And what's going to happen is you're going to rest the bead on the skin and strike the rim, down like that. So, your first rim click is going to sound like this."
