The shutter speed is one of the two determining factors as to how much light gets into your camera. The shutter is the more basic of the functions in that the longer it's open the more light comes into an image. And the shorter it's open the less light comes into an image. This can be important when if you're shooting light as a subject. I really like to shoot light as a subject. Here you'll see how I was drawn to the way the light was crawling across these bricks and the shadows were crawling across these bricks. But I had to find the right shutter speed that allowed the white light not to be blown out, and the black, black of the shadows not to be completely, completely black and have no detail in it. Another example of shutter speed and light is when you're taking a photograph with a limited light source. I still wanted to show the light in this photograph. So I had to use a little bit slower of a shutter speed than the previous photograph because there's not as much light. Basically the more light coming through, the faster you want your shutter to go. The less light coming through, the slower you want your shutter to go. If you can understand those basics, you're well on your way to understanding the relationship between the shutter speed and the light around you.
