"Dennis Garrels with Expert Village. Jazz is quite the thing. It was the early people in New Orleans that seemed to start this whole thing off. The African American population in a gifted manner throughout the century have led the way in pop music and jazz. And so we got Scott Joplin back in rag time and we got Louie Armstrong in the 20's. These early type songs, there's an entire genre, an entire literature, you can get Jelly Roll Morton music, Louis Armstrong, Scott Joplin, so many good things. You remember this from the Sting of Scott Joplin's The Entertainer. He must have written 30, 40 rags and I went to an opera that he wrote a while back. It's very nice. Dixieland came in with all the excitement of the 20's and Louis Armstrong came up the river from New Orleans to Chicago. And there were such great songs. Lot of them."
