This is watercolor painting fundamentals. I am going to talk to you about supplies, and techniques and other things associated with painting in watercolor. Supplies. Well, definitely you'll to have to have water. My recommendation is to get a clear plastic container. Clear so that you can see when it is getting dirty and that you know when to change the water. And also being plastic, you don't have to worry about it being broken. You also want something that won't tip over easily. Not like a plastic cup. When it comes to other supplies you'll need paper towels. You don't really want to use the brown commercial style towels because they are not very absorbent at all. But you don't need the premium quality towels. Just some economy paper towels is all you really need. As far as a palette you can use a Styrofoam plate. Don't use a regular paper plate because it will absorb your watercolors. A Styrofoam or a plastic plate won't. It will allow you to bring the paints up. Watercolor works so that even if it dries on your palette you can still wet it and bring it up again when it's on a non-porous surface. If it's on a porous surface like a piece of paper, it generally goes inside and it bonds over a period of time with the paper. So you can't get it up. I am using a traveling, folding storage palette. The reason they call it storage is because I can put paint in there and let it dry. When ever I want the paint to come up I just wet the brush and wipe the paint until it comes up in the brush. Now, if you're painting with a lot of dense paint, you may want to put paint on your palette straight out of the tube. That way it's denser than putting water on this and bringing it up. In fact I get a spray bottle that sprays a fine mist and spray every color seven times to start with. That's good for about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the humidity in your room. The storage palette folds up and you can take it with you. Small, portable, and it's made out of an ABS injection molded plastic. That's the best kind. You can get these at hobby shops or Internet mail order. This one's got like 24 or 28 different areas. Always get a larger quantity than you're planning on using. I generally start my students with 10 paint colors.
