Down through the ages, both classical and jazz music have featured an instrument that has been popularized in our day by Stan Getz, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, and yes, Kenny G. In case you haven’t guessed, I'm talking about the saxophone. The sax is a woodwind instrument, despite its brassy appearance. It was introduced to the world circa 1840 by a Belgian-born man named Adolphe Sax, perhaps borrowing elements from the clarinet and oboe in its creation. In addition to it's popularity in jazz ensembles and marching bands, the tenor sax is featured prominently in Afro-American, Afro-Caribbean and Latin American music.

"Okay, first I'd like to show you a few different kinds of saxophone. There's about four different types of saxophones and I've got two here today. I'll start with the tenor saxophone. This is about similar to a tenor voice in a chorus. It plays lower notes. It's right in the middle of the saxophone family. Moving up, in range, next is the alto saxophone. This is my personal favorite voice and it's similar to an alto in a chorus, playing that same type of range. Above this is a soprano saxophone. It's a straight saxophone. Everybody's familiar with Kenny G, he plays a soprano saxophone. And on the bottom end, I don't have, it's called a baritone saxophone and that's really big. You have to be sitting down to play that. It's a real big type of sax. Basically, that's the four kinds of saxophones."
