"ATHENA REICH: In this clip, I'm going to talk about preparing your monologue or preparing for an audition where they want you want to read sides. You should have prepared in your book two--at least two contemporary monologues, a comedic and a dramatic. But comedic doesn't have to be "ha-ha funny" but it should be light-hearted and have a kind of humor to it and the dramatic should obviously be dramatic. And then, if you're going to be doing classical--audition for classical theater as well, you should have your Shakespeare in your classical monologues as well as comedic and dramatic and you should definitely work on this with a coach. Don't just get a monologue and think you can wing it. Really study and work on this piece of work. Sometimes, you go to audition and they want you to read sides. If you get there as an Equity member, you only have 20 minutes to hold those sides in your hand and practice it. When I say sides I mean an excerpt from the script. So, this would be sides. This is a script. And these are my own personal sides so I was able to highlight them although you won't get that--to do that at the Equity audition. The best thing to do is to connect immediately, emotionally and personally with your character. Make a choice and commit."
