"Indian music is an oral tradition. It has been passed down orally through speech and song and playing from one generation to another. From a teacher to a student. The notation in Indian music only appeared at the end of the 19th century and it still to this day is quite rudimentary. It is used really for a memory aid. You don’t read a piece of music and play or sing it; you write it down so you don’t forget and then you can refer to it later on. "
