Tips & Warnings:

  • It's best to do headlight restoration in the shade, not in direct sunlight
  • Lift the hood of the car so you can have full access to the top of the headlight lens for cleaning / restoring.
  • Whenever Wet Sanding It is Strongly Advised To Mask The Headlight With Some Painters Tape To Prevent Possible Sanding Of Surrounding Areas.
  • First Evaluate Headlight Lens For Any Moisture Or Cracked Lenses, If There Is Moisture Trapped Inside The Lens There Is A Leak Somewhere In The Headlight Assembly And Cleaning The Outside Of The Lens Will Only Minimally Improve The Appearance And Light Output. The Inside Of The Headlight Lens Needs To Be Cleaned, Dried And Then Sealed To Prevent Further Moisture From Coming In.
  • Wear Protective Gear: Gloves, Goggles, Old Clothes, Etc.
  • Soak Wet/Dry Finishing Papers For About 5 Minutes In Soapy Water
  • Make Sure To Clean The Headlights Well Removing Bugs, Tar, Containments, Etc, Before Wet Sanding.
  • While Wet Sanding Always Keep You Pad And Sandpaper Wet, The Water Is The Key To "Wet Sanding"
  • Make Sure To Use A UV Inhibitor Coating To Seal The Lens To Prevent Future Discoloration Of The Lens.
  • When Applying Solution #3 (UV Protectant) Do not go back and forth as the coating quickly begins to harden. Let dry 24 hours. Repeat application for best protection.
  • All Solutions Are Paint Safe, But Should Be Rinsed/Wiped Off, Not Allowing To Dry On The Vehicles Paint. It Is Always Suggested That When Wet-Sanding Headlights One Should Mask The Headlight To Avoid Possible Sanding Of The Surrounding Areas.
  • Beware Of Sellers That Offer Just A Headlight Polish Or A Headlight Cleaner. They Will Only Hide The Problem Temporarily & You Will Have To Go Back And Apply It Again & Again Because There Is No Magic Polish That Will Truly Remove Enough Of The Oxidized Layer Of Plastic. There Must Be A Mechanical Process First Such As Wet Sanding The Lens.
  • Beware Of Kits That Come With Drill Attachments. Yes It is True That It May Save Time, But What They Don't Mention Is That You Can Very Easily Burn The Plastic Lens Or Create Swirl Marks That Never Come Out. You Need Training Or Experience Before Trying This Method, Don't Learn The Hard Way. Also You May Slip Off Your Headlight With Your Drill And Gauge Your Vehicles Paint Job.
  • Most Importantly, A Headlight Restoration Kit Is Not A Complete Kit Unless They Provide You With A Sealer. It Must Be A UV Inhibitor Coating. Otherwise All The Work That You Done & The Money You Spent Was Wasted Because The Headlight Cancer----A.K.A. Cloudy Foggy Headlights Will Soon Come Back Because The Lens Was Not Sealed.
  • Not To Be Used On Glass Headlamps, Only Plastic Headlamps/Fog Lights.

on 2/19/2008 Anyone can now restore their headlights quickly and easily these days but few have all of the necessary supplies. If you do not have the items in the "Things You Need" section you can either go to your local auto parts store and buy all of the items, likely spending too much and buying far too much product to get the job done or you can visit The Headlight Solution at http://www.headlightsolution.net for your own Do-It-Yourself Headlight Restoration Kit. It includes everything you need to restore and refinish those cloudy headlights like new again.
