Hello, everyone. I'm Joshua Clement, and today I'm going to talk to you about how to run an outlet from your light fixture box. Adding new outlets around can be very convenient. But one of the downfalls to this is you turn off the outlet when you turn off your switch to your light fixture. So you might want to keep that in mind before jumping right in to this project. For this job I'm going to be using a battery powered drill, some electrical tape, a new outlet, a pair of pliers, and wire long enough to run to your new outlet. So the first thing we need to do to make sure that the power is off to the area that we're working with. Next we're going to go ahead and remove our light fixture. You do that by removing the mounting nuts located either on the side of on the inside of the light fixture. After that's done, we're going to pull out our electrical and disconnect it. After that's done we're going to take our wire and push it through the hole in either the back or the top of the box. And then we'll run the other side to our outlet. Now we're going to open up our wire to expose what's on the inside which should be three wires. A black, a white and a ground. Go ahead and get rid of the extra insulation there. Then we're going to strip about half an inch off of our black and our white wires. After that's done, we're going to take our light fixture and put all three white wires together. We're going to do that by using our wire nuts and tightening them down in to place. After everything is wired up we're going to take our electrical tape and go ahead and tape our wire nuts. Start at the base of the wire nut. Make sure that you get the wire with the tape. And roll it right on top of your wire nut. After that's done, we're going to take our wires and push them back in to our box. Then we're going to reconnect our light fixture. Now we're going to move on to the outlet. Here you'll have three wires coming out, your black, your white and your ground. We're going to take and put a curl on each one of these. Then we're going to take our outlet. Our outlet has a brass side and a silver side with one ground screw which is green. What we'll do is we'll take our white one and hook it up to the silver side and tighten it up. Then we'll go ahead and hook up our ground. We're going to go ahead and flip our outlet over and make sure that this wire's curve is going around the same way that you'll tighten your screw. Now for the other two screws that are left sticking out, go ahead and tighten those up. You want to do this to make sure that you aren't going to arc it across anything inside the box. Then we'll go ahead and push it in to our box and tighten it up in our box. Running outlets off of your light fixtures is a great way to add new outlets around the place especially if you're just trying to put in some lamps. Thank you all for watching and good luck with this project.
