Hi, I'm Dan Reinecke with Unknown Media, and today I'm going to show you how to achieve a gritty grunge portrait effect. For this we're going to hop in to a photo editing software. Let's take a look. All right so this is the photo that I have chosen to use for our grungy photo effect. A man contemplating his nine iron. So what we're going to do, we're going to go ahead and create a duplicate layer of the background. Now what we're going to do this, we're going to go into our filters and add a high pass filter. Now what this is going to do is select some really fine points, it's going to really sharpen those edges for you. Let's go ahead and turn the radius up. Let's go about seven. Now what we're going to do, we're going to change the blending layer of that to let's go hard light. Overlay also works. But hard light is a little bit more intense. Now as you can see as I toggle it off and on, the difference between the two. Now what we're going to do is create a composite layer. What I do with that, going to go shift, option, command, e, and that's going to be a composite of both the background and the background copy that we had. Now let's change that to let's go ahead and change it to overlay. Now you can see it's a very dramatic change in contrast and saturation. I'll toggle that off and on there. Now with that let's go ahead up into here to our filters and add an unsharpen mask. Now as you can see I have a low radius and a high amount. That's going to really just grab on to those pixels. Just want to over emphasize the effect for this tutorial. OK. Now from here let's go ahead and even add some noise. We'll try monochromatic, then we'll go just really make it as gritty as you possibly can. Now from here there's a lot of things that you can do. One thing I'll go ahead and add a vibrance. We'll take the saturation down just a bit and let's go ahead and add a color balance layer. Just really kind of distort the colors just to give that full effect. Almost as nasty as you could in a way. Now as you can see the difference when I shut it all off. That is our original photo. And now it is a grungy photo. And that's how we achieve a gritty grunge portrait effect. I'm Dan Reinecke. Take your best shot.
