Hello, I'm Lori Lahnemann, director of The Philadelphia Dance Academy and The Philadelphia Youth Ballet. In this video we are going to review some essential terms using every ballet class, every day that every dancer must know. The first one we will show is a plie. You can do a demi plie, which is a half plie or a grande plie which is a full plie all the way down. Plie means to bend or to fold at the knee. Battement Tendu is a stretch leg and foot. Battement Jete or sometimes called Degage is similar to a tendu, but goes a little bit higher, a few inches off the ground. Grande battement, which means large beat, is like a jete, but much larger with much more energy and goes to 90 degrees and sometimes even higher. Rond de jambe means circle of the leg. Pirouette is a turn that can be done in multiple directions in different positions but we're going to show you the most basic en dehors pirouette in passe. In saute means to jump. We'll, show you a basic saute in first position and changement, which means to change the legs, but they can be done small, medium and very large. Again, these are some basic terms that are done in a ballet class every day. I'm Lori Lahnemann from The Philadelphia Dance Academy.
