I’m Justin Z. I’m a Los Angeles filmmaker and freelance editor. I’ve been getting some basic questions about filmmaking, including this one: “How do you make a living as a videographer?” Well, it’s very similar to making a living as a freelance editor. I also do videography on the side, but I mostly stick to editing. But, the principles are the same. First of all, you’re going to need a camera – a video camera – a professional video camera. So, a DSLR camera like the one I’m using to talk to you now, or different kinds of cameras. Just look it up on the Internet, you’ll find out. Second thing you’ll need to do is try to find work. You can browse websites like Craigslist, Mandy, build connections, do favors for friends, things like that. The third thing you’re going to need to do is advertise. You’re going to need a website. That website should show exactly what you’ve done, clips from other shoots that you’ve had – concerts, movies, short films, whatever. It should also have a reel – basically a compilation of everything you’ve done, the best bits, so someone can very quickly look at what you’ve done. Also, on that website should be your resume, and you should have a paper resume on hand for any types of interviews you might have. It should include long-term and short-term work, as well as experience with equipment you have, your education, and the equipment you own. Like any other job, where you are located will depend on how much work you get, as well as the kind of work you get. Living in Los Angeles, there are a lot of opportunities - New York is the same. Any major city, you’re going to find opportunities for videography. But, they differ depending on where you are. The important thing is to not limit yourself to what kind of jobs you get. There are always weddings going on, birthday parties, bar mitzvahs, things like that. So, if you see weddings that you can shoot at, then definitely take advantage of that, because that’s definitely an opportunity to make quite a bit of money. So, that’s pretty much all there is to it when it comes to making a living as a freelance videographer. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
